Raintree - Who We Are

Our Affiliation
Raintree is an autonomous Church, with no denominational ties to any group.   However, we are affiliated with other Christian Churches around the country.   These sister-churches have an allegiance to the Bible and to Christ Jesus.

These Christian Churches hold to a simple uniting plea of being "Christians only." We don't believe that we are "the only Christians -just Christians only!"   Our historical desire has been to "restore" God's church as we read about it in the New Testament.   Hence, we are a part of the "American Restoration Movement"--sometimes known as the Stone/Campell movement after the founders.

A Brief History
In the spring of 1970, Brother Floyd Lane laid the ground work to begin a new Christian church in Lubbock.   The name UNIVERSITY CHRISTIAN CHURCH was selected and the organizational meeting was set for May 15, 1970, at Calvary Baptist Church, 1921 18th Street.   Area Christian Churches supported the meeting with 184 in attendance.   (This meeting was four days after the Lubbock tornado.)

At the close of this meeting, there were 12 charter members.   The following Sunday, May 17, 1970, University Christian Church began meeting at the International Order of Odd Fellows Hall (I.O.O.F. Hall) with Brother Floyd Lane as their minister.   Brother Lane resigned in December, 1970.   Amarillo elders filled the pulpit until the arrival of Charles Carman in March of 1971.

On January 10, 1971 the congregation left the I.O.O.F. Hall and began meeting at 38th and Quaker.    On February 14, 1971 the congregation moved into a building they had purchased at 1809 N. Ash.   In 1973 the church purchased a three acre tract of land in the brand new Raintree addition on the extreme south side of Lubbock. While the congregation sold the North Ash property and built the new facility on 82nd, they moved to the YWCA building on 35th and Flint.   The construction on the new building began May 5, 1975.   The church took possession of the completed building on October 15, 1975.   The first meeting in the new building at 3601 82nd Street was held on October 19, 1975 with 183 present.

The congregation continues to grow and change at the present location: In August of 1983 the church voted to change its name to Raintree Christian Church . In 1996 a 22,000 square foot addition was completed.   In 1999 the church became debt free and burned the note to their mortgage.   On April 30, 2000 Charles Carman retired after 29 years of ministry at Raintree.   David Robertson served as the interim Senior Minister until Lanny Hemmings was called as Senior Minister in February of 2001.   Lanny served in that role until July 2004.   David Drake came to Raintree in 2003 and has served primarily as our youth and college minister.   Most recently, Dave was named our associate minister as he also functions as our gifted worship minister.   On Sunday October 29, 2006 the elders commissioned Brent McCall as the new Senior Minister for Raintree.
